The George to Knysna drive is short enough to feel like a warmup and beautiful enough to be the highlight of a Garden Route trip. Sixty-three kilometres on the N2, around 1h 12m end-to-end, no toll plazas, and fuel cost for a sedan that rounds to less than R 50. The value is not the distance — it is everything alongside the road.

The road

From George the N2 climbs briefly before dropping into the Wilderness valley. Wilderness is the first of the Garden Route’s coastal villages and many South Africans consider it the most beautiful: the Touw River estuary, a long beach backed by forest, and the Outeniqua Mountains behind it. The N2 skirts the edge of it — you see the lagoon through the trees.

After Wilderness, the road passes through the Kaaimans River gorge, which is one of the most impressive short sections of driving in the Western Cape. The N2 is cut into a cliff above the river, and the old railway bridge below — still used by the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe historically, though the service has been intermittent — is photographed obsessively. Go slowly here even if not legally required.

Sedgefield follows: a quieter, more local version of the Garden Route villages. Then the Goukamma Nature Reserve boundary, and finally Knysna announces itself via the Heads — the rocky sandstone cliffs guarding the lagoon entrance that you see from the N2 before turning off into town.

No tolls

No SANRAL plazas on this route. Total vehicle cost is fuel only: around R 44–48 for a sedan. Even a bakkie barely clears R 65. This is one of the cheapest drives per kilometre of scenery in the country.

Where to stop

Wilderness: Pull off for at least 10 minutes. The beach access road is short and the view of the estuary from the sand is free. Several coffee shops on the main road through the village are good for a pit stop.

Kaaimans Pass area: There is a lay-by above the river gorge. It is not always clearly signed — keep an eye out going east around 15 km from George. The view down to the railway bridge is the one in every coffee-table book about the Garden Route.

Sedgefield: The Saturday slow market (mornings only) is a lekker stop if timing aligns. Fresh produce, baked goods, local crafts. Even if the market is not running, the village has a relaxed energy that the more tourist-heavy Garden Route towns sometimes lack.

When to drive

Year-round. Rain falls in the Garden Route in all seasons — it is one of the wettest parts of the Western Cape — but it rarely disrupts driving. Mist comes in on winter mornings but lifts quickly.

December through January is peak season: expect traffic on the N2 approaching Knysna on Friday afternoons, and plan for parking difficulties in Knysna town itself. The lagoon and the Waterfront area in Knysna are genuinely packed. That said, the energy is good and the light in summer is superb.

The shoulder months — October, November, March, April — give you good weather with fewer people.

Knysna arrival notes

Knysna town is more compact than it looks on a map. The Waterfront and Timber Village area near the lagoon is where most visitors spend their time. There are good supermarkets for restocking if you are on a multi-day Garden Route road trip. Fuel here — prices in Knysna are comparable to George and slightly lower than the smaller villages further east.

What it actually costs

  • Fuel: around R 44–48 (sedan, 7 L/100km, ULP 95)
  • Tolls: R 0
  • Total vehicle cost: under R 50 one-way for a sedan

This is the one route on this site where the cost guide almost feels beside the point. Drive it slowly, stop twice, and do not rush through the Kaaimans gorge.

Practicalities

  • Distance: 63 km
  • Drive time: Around 1h 12m; allow 2h if you stop at Wilderness and Kaaimans
  • Speed limits: Watch for 60 km/h and 80 km/h zones through the villages — enforced
  • Fuel: Fill up in George before leaving; there are stations in Wilderness and Knysna if needed but George prices tend to be lower
