The Cape Town to George drive is where the Garden Route begins. At 440 km and around 4h 30m, it is long enough to justify a proper road-trip mindset but short enough to be comfortable as a single day’s drive. There are no SANRAL toll plazas on this route, which makes the fuel calculation straightforward — just distance and your vehicle’s appetite.
The road
The N2 east from Cape Town climbs immediately over Sir Lowry’s Pass, with False Bay spread out below and the Hottentots Holland mountains ahead. This first section through Somerset West and the Overberg is arguably the most visually rewarding stretch of the whole Cape–George drive: the mountains come in close, the farmland is green, and the road is well-engineered.
Grabouw and Elgin are apple country — the valley here grows a significant portion of South Africa’s export fruit, and the orchards in spring and autumn are genuinely beautiful. Villiersdorp, Caledon, and then the R316 junction signals the Overberg proper. Swellendam is the gateway town before the final run to Mossel Bay and George.
From Swellendam east, the road flattens and the vegetation changes — the fynbos thickens and the coastal character of the Garden Route starts to announce itself. Heidelberg, Riversdale, Albertinia. The smell of the sea arrives before you see it. Mossel Bay is 60 km before George and worth a brief stop if you have not visited; the Dias Museum complex near the harbour is compact and genuinely interesting.
George itself sits below the Outeniqua Mountains — a functional regional town with good facilities and access to the Wilderness beaches just 20 minutes east.
No tolls
This route passes through no SANRAL toll plazas. Total vehicle cost is almost entirely fuel. For a sedan at 7 L/100km and current ULP 95 prices, budget around R 300–320 for the full 440 km.
Where to stop
Grabouw/Elgin area (around 80 km from Cape Town): The R321 through Elgin valley is a worthwhile detour for apple juice, cider, and padstals. You will only lose 15 minutes but gain a lot of scenery.
Swellendam (around 225 km, roughly halfway): A handsome Overberg town with coffee shops, a good bakery, and the Drostdy Museum. Good fuel top-up point.
Mossel Bay (around 390 km): A logical pre-George fuel and food stop. The Point area near the harbour has several decent restaurants and the town is far more pleasant than its industrial port reputation suggests.
When to drive
This route is genuinely pleasant year-round. Cape winters bring rain but rarely anything that disrupts driving — though Sir Lowry’s Pass can get thick mist, requiring slower speeds.
December through January, the N2 from Cape Town towards the Garden Route sees heavy weekend traffic — especially Friday afternoons. Leaving Cape Town before 8am on a Friday or after 7pm avoids most of it. The road itself is wide enough to handle the volume; it just slows to 80 km/h in the busiest patches.
Off-season (April through September) is excellent — light traffic, cool coastal air, and a more relaxed pace through every town.
