The Johannesburg to Nelspruit drive is the standard approach to Kruger National Park from Gauteng. At 360 km and around 4 hours on the N4, it is not a punishing drive — well within a comfortable morning departure and afternoon Kruger check-in. The road runs east from Johannesburg through the coal country around Witbank, past Middelburg, and then descends from the Highveld escarpment into the subtropical Lowveld. That descent is where the drive changes character.

The road

From Johannesburg east, the N4 is dual carriageway through Benoni and past Brakpan before passing through the Witbank/Emalahleni area. This stretch is functional rather than scenic — the coal mines that powered South Africa’s industrial growth are visible on both sides. Keep speed legal through here; there are frequent traffic enforcement operations.

Middelburg (not to be confused with the Western Cape town of the same name) is the halfway point and a good fuel stop. The N4 continues east and the character of the road shifts as elevation builds and drops. After Belfast the descent into the escarpment valley begins and the bush starts announcing itself — more trees, different colours, and by the time you reach Waterval Boven the change is complete.

Nelspruit (officially Mbombela) is the capital of Mpumalanga and a proper city — good supermarkets, hospitals, shopping centres, and the full infrastructure you want to stock up at before heading into a game reserve. It is also the closest major town to Kruger’s Crocodile Bridge and Malelane gates in the south.

Toll plazas

Three SANRAL plazas on the N4:

  1. Diamond Hill — east of Johannesburg
  2. Middelburg — at the Middelburg interchange
  3. Machado — approaching Nelspruit

Combined Class 1 tolls run to around R 80–100. The N4 is a SANRAL managed toll road with e-tag lanes at all plazas — if you are making this drive regularly for Kruger trips, an e-tag pays back quickly.

Where to stop

Middelburg (around 175 km): Large fuel stations with fast food options at the N4 interchange. It is the most practical midpoint stop and has the full range of facilities. The town itself is not worth a detour from the N4.

Dullstroom detour: If you are not in a rush, the R540 north from Belfast to Dullstroom adds about 45 minutes but delivers a very different character — cool, misty mountain village, well-known for trout and for having the most interesting petrol station stop per capita in South Africa. Return to the N4 at Machadodorp.

Sudwala Caves: Signed off the N4 about 30 km before Nelspruit, these limestone caves have been used continuously for tens of thousands of years. The 60-minute guided tour is well worth it as a pre-Kruger activity.

Nelspruit itself: Fill up before heading into the park — fuel prices inside Kruger are significantly higher than in town. The large supermarket chains in Nelspruit’s retail precincts are the last place to stock food and supplies at normal prices.

When to drive

Year-round without significant disruption, though the N4 Sunday-evening freight traffic from Mozambique is worth noting — eastbound on Sunday afternoons the road is mostly fine, but westbound on Sunday evenings is heavy with trucks.

For Kruger park itself, April through September is the dry-season game-viewing peak. The drive to Nelspruit is pleasant in all seasons.

What it actually costs

For a sedan at current fuel prices:

  • Fuel: around R 250–270 for 360 km at 7 L/100km
  • Tolls: around R 80–100 (Class 1 vehicle)
  • Total: around R 330–370 one-way

SUVs and bakkies add R 60–100 in fuel costs.

Practicalities

  • Distance: 360 km
  • Drive time: Around 4 hours; allow 5h for a leisurely pace with one stop
  • Malaria: Nelspruit is in a low-risk zone, but Kruger and the Lowveld lowlands carry seasonal malaria risk. Consult a travel medicine clinic before visiting.
  • Fuel inside Kruger: Petrol is available at several rest camps inside the park but is priced higher than Nelspruit. Fill up in town.
  • Cell coverage: Good throughout; Vodacom and MTN both have coverage in the park along most tar roads, less so on dirt tracks.
